For some reason, I usually seem to be able to research this weapon long before I can research Heavy Cannons. Maybe it's because Hyper Velocity Cannons require fewer items to research, while Heavy Cannons require APFSDS Cannon Rounds Mk2 and Composite Alloys Mk3 as a prerequisite.
Oddly enough, it's possible to research this before researching Medium Cannons, which this weapon supposedly replaces.

The Hyper-Velocity Cannon (HVC) is an amazing weapon when used offensively and defensively, especially due to its early-game entry. I've been known to get it in ~20 minutes, and if I focused my efforts solely on getting it, I could do it in ~15.
The HVC Hardpoints will hold a defensive line even against heavy-bodied vehicles and cyborgs alike for quite a while. I don't waste my time or money with the medium and heavy Cannons, I just go HVC, and [sometimes] replace it late game with Twin Assault Cannons.

I'm not sure why this weapon is called the Hyper Velocity Cannon, but I think it is because the shell takes very little time to reach the target.

I'd use this weapon readily on Heavy bodies if it didn't look so stupid on them. Seriously, it's an 88mm cannon, why's it smaller than a 76mm?
Maybe it's a goof, and it's supposed to be a 57mm or 47mm?
